EDINBURG – For the fourth game in a row, Bryan Iliohan inserted himself into the goal column as the California Baptist University men's soccer team closed out its seven-game road trip today against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, dropping the match in the final moments by a score of 2-1. The Lancers will return home with an overall record of 6-2-2 and 1-1-1 in the Western Athletic Conference while the Vaqueros improve to 5-3 on the season, and 2-0 in the WAC.
"We walked into an extremely challenging situation playing on one day rest against a fresh team and executed our game plan so, so well. It hurts because of how big the challenge was and how well we coped with it and it's just so unfortunate that similar to Friday we shot ourselves in the foot and gifted points to our opposition in spite of so many good things we did," said Head Coach Coe Michaelson after the match. "It's vital that we overcome this disappointment, because as bad as this tastes right now I can't fault what the guys have produced over the course of a grueling road trip."
Iliohan got the Lancers on the board early as the striker received a long pass from defender Antonio Gomez, battled through physical defense, and secured his first shot for a goal. This marks four-straight games with a goal for Iliohan which is tied for the fourth-longest streak in program history, and the longest such streak in the Division I era.
CBU maintained that lead through halftime and until the 67th minute when UTRGV equalized on a well-assisted goal from just outside the box. The Vaqueros would take the lead in the 83rd minute from a corner kick that was not fully controlled the by Lancers defensively, and was soon found by a UTRGV player for the go-ahead goal.
The Lancers would get another two shots off before the final buzzer, but neither would find the back of the net. Iliohan and Luis Mueller each took a game-high four shots, while Gomez, who had the Lancer assist, chipped in one shot as well.
This match concluded a stretch of nine-straight road games played by the Lancers, wherein the amassed a respectable 4-2-1 record. During the near month-long journey, CBU managed to outscore opponents 14-9, while also earning multiple conference and national awards.
