LAS CRUCES --- California Baptist University finished its first Western Athletic Conference road swing on Sunday, as the Lancers dropped a heartbreaker to NM State.
The 1-0 loss came in the final two minutes, as the Aggies were able to find the back of the net in the 88th minute. The loss drops the Lancers to 3-6-1 on the season and 1-2 in the WAC, while the Aggies improve to 7-6 on the year and 3-1 in conference play. CBU is now 3-1 all-time when facing NM State.
It was a game of possession for the full 90 minutes, as the Lancers kept the ball on the offensive attack for most of the game. In fact, the Lancers went into the break with a 6-5 advantage on shots with three of the six on frame, while the Aggies managed one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes.
Karley Weeks and Devyn Kelsey led the Lancers' offense, as both players recorded three shots apiece.
"We are really proud of the fight and grit the team showed today," said associate head coach Seth Taylor. "This was a tough road trip coupled with its fair share of adversity, but we showed heart and resiliency throughout. We played well enough to get a result but just couldn't capitalize on the chances we created. Credit to NM State, they are having a great season and capitalized on its opportunity at the end of the game today."
