The Lancers (6-3-3, 1-3-2) dropped their second consecutive match in Big West play. O'Brien anchored the defensive effort throughout the 90 minutes, making seven saves in the first half and five more after the break to keep CBU within striking distance.
Utah Valley applied pressure early, but O'Brien came up with several key stops to keep the Wolverines off the scoreboard. The visitors eventually broke through in the 30th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
CBU recorded one shot in the opening half as O'Brien continued to hold off the Wolverines. The Lancers entered halftime trailing by one but remained within reach thanks to O'Brien's seven saves.
The Lancers showed increased urgency after the break, pushing forward while O'Brien remained busy in goal. Her biggest moment came in the 72nd minute, when she denied a penalty kick to preserve the one-goal deficit and give CBU an opportunity to find an equalizer.
CBU continued to generate chances late in the second half, with Alyse Then forcing a save in the 77th minute and Nikki Mau testing the Utah Valley goalkeeper in the 87th minute. The Lancers also earned three corner kicks after halftime as they looked to level the score, but Utah Valley held on for the 1-0 victory.
"I don't believe the stats reflected the game," said Kristen St. Clair. "I was impressed with our team's heart and work rate tonight. Mikayla O'Brien once again proved she is the best goalkeeper in the conference. Our defense was strong, and we created the most dangerous attacking opportunities of the game. Ultimately, the game came down to executing in the margins, consistently winning balls in the midfield and finishing our chances in the box.
"In this conference, every team is strong, so the margins are paper-thin. There were some unfortunate calls that did not go our way, but we can't control that. We need to be sharper in our execution in front of goal. We'll take this lesson, apply it, get better and begin preparing for our next opponent."
O'Brien finished with 12 saves, moving into fifth place in CBU history for saves in a single game. CBU finished with five shots, three on target and three corner kicks. The Lancers will return to the road on Saturday, Oct. 17, traveling to Northridge to face CSUN at 7 p.m. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
