Caballero Drives in Five in CBU's Three-Run Win in Series Finale

RIVERSIDE – Ulises Caballero drove in five runs to lead California Baptist University baseball to an 8-5 win in its series finale with Saint Mary's on Sunday at Totman Stadium.

Caballero headlined CBU's offense with a two-run double and a three-run homer. The Lancers move to 3-4 on the year, as they head into a three-game series at UC Davis. Sunday ended the Gaels' four-game winning streak, as they drop to 5-3.

True freshman Liam Rocha logged his second-straight strong start on the mound, as he limited the Gaels to two runs on four hits, two walks and struck out five over five innings. Jacob McCarvel and CJ Culpepper closed out the game for the Lancers.

McCarvel shutout SMC over 1.2 innings where he gave up just one hit and hit two batters. Culpepper earned the win in relief after he closed out the final 2.1 innings in which he struck out three.

CBU jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Sunday. Caballero plated a pair with a double in the first inning and Nick Plaia brought the Lancers' third run home with an RBI single in the second.

The Gaels fought back and tied the game at 3-3 in the eighth inning. The Lancers responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to go up 8-3 and all but put the game away. Chad Castillo drew a leadoff walk and John Glenn moved him to second with a one-out single.

Caballero blasted the three-run homer to put CBU ahead 6-3. The Gaels then recorded the second out, but the rally wasn't over yet. Harrison Spohn doubled, stole third and then scored on a wild pitch.

Mitchel Simon, a true freshman, drew a full-count walk to keep the pressure on and scored on a RBI double from Chad Minato to make it 8-3. The Gaels hit a two-run homer in the ninth, but had their next two batters retired to end the game.
