Lancers Show Resilience to Secure Crucial One-Goal Win at Utah Valley
3/11/2021 7:01:00 PM | Women's Soccer
OREM – California Baptist University women's soccer found itself in an unusual position down a goal in Thursday night's matchup with Utah Valley, the top team in the Western Athletic Conference standings.
It was short-lived, as the Lancers rattled off two goals two-and-a-half minutes later to earn the 2-1 road win over the Wolverines in what felt like a playoff game at Clyde Field. CBU improves to 7-1-1 and 5-1 in the WAC and snaps UVU's four-game winning streak, as it slips to 6-3-1, 5-2-0.
The victory keeps the Lancers firmly in the top-three standing in the conference, and well within the hunt for their first WAC title. CBU and Utah Valley will face off again on Saturday at noon Pacific in another crucial game when it comes to conference positioning.
Karley Weeks and Amy Aquino provided the goals for CBU. It was the third goal of the season for Weeks, while Aquino netted her fifth goal of the season to tie Rola Badawiya for the team-high.
Badawiya built on her team lead for points this year, with her 13th on an assist Thursday. She now has a point in five of eight games this season, including the last three. Badawiya, who was recently named TicketSmarterWAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, came into the ranking top-45 in the NCAA for goals and points this year.
Romy Salvador helped anchor CBU's defense with two saves in goal. She also showed off her ball control to help keep UVU out of the net.
CBU had to overcome inclement weather, as there was a snowstorm about 90 minutes before game time while it was 35 degrees at the start of the game. The Lancers weren't interested in excuses, though, a day after they earned their first top-10 ranking in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Pacific Region poll on Wednesday.
The Lancers came out the aggressor and controlled most of the first half, but the Wolverines still managed to score first off a redirect from Julianna Carter on a corner kick 17 minutes into the action. It only served to fire up CBU, as 74 seconds later, it had the equalizer.
Badawiya set it all up, as she took possession just outside of UVU's box, made her move around her defender and then played a low cross in front of the goal. Weeks ran onto it and buried into the far corner to things up at 1-1.
Seventy-seven seconds later, CBU was in its usual position back in front off a play coming on a throw-in. Aquino provided the go-ahead and winning goal with a rocket to the near post that left Utah Valley's goalie with no chance.
Utah Valley turned on the pressure in the final 10 minutes of regulation, desperate for the equalizer. The Wolverines were able to earn three corners and a free kick in good position, but CBU's defense ensured neither opportunity produced a shot on frame as it came away with the one-goal win.
"We're really proud of the team's resolve and grit tonight," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "We knew we would need to execute for 90 minutes. Going down a goal early in a game is always challenging; however, I was pleased with our collective response to the adversity. The team rolled up its sleeves and battled back into the game; that was big time! Great goals by Karley Weeks and Amy Aquino. We'll enjoy this tonight and turn our focus to preparing for game two on Saturday."
