Lancers Sweep Northern Colorado, Securing Adcock's 600th Win and Opening WAC Season as Lone Undefeated

Relief pitching was key to the Lancers' 2-1 win in Sunday's opener, while a five-run inning fueled them to a 7-4 victory in the series finale at Totman Stadium.
CBU has now won eight straight and is the only undefeated team in WAC play through week one of the conference season at 10-4 overall and 4-0 in league action. Northern Colorado opens up the WAC season at 4-11, 0-4.
John Glenn, Damon Keith and Mitchel Simon led CBU's offense on Sunday, as all three hit .500 over both games. Glenn and Keith both went 3-for-6, while Keith had two runs batted in and Simon went 2-for-4.
Relief pitching continued to be huge for the Lancers in the series. Drew Necochea and Ryan Silva earned wins out of the bullpen, while Jacob McCarvel and CJ Culpepper each had a save on the day.

Congratulations to Coach Gary Adcock on his 600th career win here at CBU. He has a 600-300-1 record for a 66.6 winning percentage in his 18 seasons in Riverside. #LanceUp⚔️ pic.twitter.com/leHrqHtwk3
MR. 600
Sunday's first win was good for Adcock's 600th career victory as a head coach and at CBU. It brought his record to 601-300-1 for a 66.7 winning percentage in his 18 seasons in Riverside. The Lancers have been a perennial power under Adcock. Fourteen of his 15 eligible teams have qualified for the postseason, winning seven conference championships, including a four-year run from 2010 to 2013. Twenty-two of his players have been All-American, 21 were named national scholar athletes and 24 were selected in the MLB Draft.
GAME ONE
CBU's bullpen made due with little run support in Sunday's opener, as Liam Rocha, Spencer Bengard, Necochea and McCarvel held Northern Colorado to just one run.
The Bears opened the scoring right away and scored their run in the top of the first, but the Lancers answered right back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to go up 2-1.

Nick Plaia started the bottom of the first with a full-count walk, and back-to-back first-pitch singles from Chad Minato and Damon Keith scored him. Another walk to Glenn loaded the bases, and Ulises Caballero scored the second run with a sacrifice fly to the warning track.
It wound up being the winning run, thanks to the Lancers' pitchers. Necochea and McCarvel each threw two shutout innings of relief, while Bengard added a scoreless inning, as well.
Necochea earned his first win of the season, as he gave up just one walk and struck out a pair over two innings. McCarvel notched his first save of the season, and gave up just one hit while striking out five in the final two innings. McCarvel also put together an immaculate inning in the sixth, striking out all three batters he faced on just nine pitches.

Bengard threw one shutout inning in relief in a big moment. The true freshman was called on with two runners on with no outs in the third. He got a grounder to shortstop for the first out, which allowed both Bears to move into scoring position. Northern Colorado then ran itself out of the inning, as its man on third left early on a sacrifice fly to right field for an inning-ending double play.
GAME TWO
The Lancers' offense jumped all over the Bears in the series finale, with five runs in the first inning. Keith and Glenn doubled in the inning, while Caballero and Plaia both had two-run singles. CBU added another run in the second to take a 6-0 lead.

Northern Colorado managed to make things interesting by scoring the next four runs to cut its deficit to 6-4 in the seventh. CBU used small ball to tack on an insurance run in the eighth to cap the scoring.
Russell Stevenson drew a leadoff walk in the inning and was then substituted for pinch runner Garrett Ostrander. A sacrifice bunt moved him to second before he stole third with one out.
A perfectly-executed suicide squeeze from Harrison Spohn brought Ostrander home safely to make the score 7-4.

Six different pitchers appeared in Sunday's finale. Silva earned the victory after throwing a career-long 3.1 inning in which he struck out three and gave up two runs.
Brett Finnel struck out both batters he faced in the eighth inning to strand a runner in scoring position and keep CBU up by two, 6-4. Matt Amrhein got the first two outs in the ninth before Culpepper struck out the final batter of the game for his fourth save of the season.
