RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University and UC Riverside played another installment of the Crosstown Showdown on Sunday afternoon, splitting the day as CBU won game one of the doubleheader 6-3 before dropping game two by a score of 7-4. The Lancers improve to 7-14 on the back of the series win of the Highlanders as UC Riverside sits at 1-8.
GAME ONE
The Lancers started sophomore Gretchen Goldsmith in the circle, just her second start of the year but earning her first win of 2021. Goldsmith allowed nine hits, but limited damage to just three seventh inning desperation runs by the Highlanders.

The Lancer' bats connected for nine hits, the most for the team since February 26 when they marked a season-high 13 in the win against Santa Clara. Brittany Galvez opened things up in the third inning by driving in the opening run on a double to centerfield to put the Lancers up 1-0.

The fifth inning is where the Lancers truly blew the game wide open, scoring five runs with one out. Mia Alvarez began the onslaught with a long single down the left field line, scoring Tiana Patrick.

Galvez again knocked in a run, this time with a single up the middle, scoring Alissa Montes De Oca. CBU immediately followed that with a Makayla Jordan, two-run single up the middle, scoring Alvarez and pinch runner Michaila Harrington.

The final Lancer run of the game would come at the hands of Katelyn Mangrello who lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, easily scoring Ashley McBay from third.
The Highlanders would add three runs in the seventh inning on a two-out, bases loaded double to the centerfield wall, but Goldsmith would force a lineout to the next batter to secure the win.
GAME TWO
The series finale was all UCR as the Highlanders took a commanding lead after scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning and adding one more in the second and third innings.
CBU got on the board in the top of the sixth with an unearned run, and would threaten again in the seventh when leadoff hitter Montes De Oca would double to center. Ashley McBay would score Montes De Oca two batters with a slap double to center field.
The Lancer rally would continue to plate a total of three runs, but would fall short of completing the comeback and the Lancers would fall 7-4.
WHAT'S NEXT
CBU will prepare to take on Long Beach State in a doubleheader on Tuesday evening at John C. Funk Stadium. First-pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
