RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University women's water polo's challenging schedule continued with a Golden Coast Conference meeting with 13th-ranked Pacific on Saturday.
Morgan Baker led the 18th-ranked Lancers with two goals, while Kyra Foley had several big saves in the cage, but the Tigers came away with the 12-6 win at the Lancer Aquatics Center. Pacific improves to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the GCC to remain tied for the lead in the league standings. CBU has played one of the toughest schedules in the country this year, as it moves to 3-9 overall and 1-3 in the GCC. All nine losses have come against top-17 opponents, with eight against top-13 foes.
Overall, CBU has played seven road games, 10 games against top-20 teams, six games against top-10 opponents and four top-five games all coming on the road.
CBU kept things close through the first 22 minutes on Saturday. The Lancers trailed 4-2 at halftime, but fought back to tie the game, 4-4, two minutes into the third quarter on back-to-back goals from Kira O'Donell and Maddie Schwegler.
The Tigers went on to score the next eight goals to secure the victory. Baker and Melinna Galbraith closed out the game on a 2-0 run for the Lancers.
Foley finished the game with five saves and four steals for CBU, with two spectacular saves where she left all alone against an attacker. Schwegler wound up with a goal, assist, steal and drawn ejection. O'Donell and Galbraith both posted a goal, assist and drawn ejection for the Lancers.
TIGERS AT A GLANCE
Pacific has been a formidable force under Coach James Graham over the last the nine seasons. The Tigers are the three-time defending GCC champions, have reached the last three NCAA Championships quarterfinals (2017-19) and finished each of those seasons with top-10 NCAA rankings. Pacific has also accumulated five 15-plus win seasons over the last six years.

The Lancers' season-long, five-game homestand comes to a close when Concordia visits Riverside on Friday, April 2 at noon. CBU then ends the regular season with road games at Santa Clara (April 10) and San Diego State (April 17), as it looks to secure a top-four finish in the GCC for a berth to the conference championships at Pacific (April 23-25).
