Lancers Complete Series Sweep Over Cougars

IRVINE --- It was another dominating performance for the California Baptist University's women's soccer team on Saturday, as the Lancers came away with their second Western Athletic Conference series sweep on the year.

The Lancers put together another 7-0 performance against the Cougars to improve to 6-1-1 on the season and 4-1 in the WAC. The Cougars fall to 0-7 on the year and 0-5 in conference play.

Rola Badawiya led the Lancers for the second straight game, recording her first hat-trick of the season, as five different Lancers found the back of the net. Badawiya came away with five goals in the series against the Cougars.

Cora Jacoby helped the Lancers get things going in the first five minutes of the game, as the defender played a perfect ball into the box for a Badawiya header.

The Lancers kept the pressure on three minutes later, as Ari Coronado played a low bending cross into the box that Madison Sonerholm received for the one-touch into the net. The goal marks Sonerholm's first of her young career.

The scoring may have settled down, but the pressure did not. The Lancers continued to keep the ball on their offensive side of the field, and they broke through at the 39th minute. McKenna Ray hit a ball well outside the box that was saved by Cougars' goalkeeper and bounced off the crossbar. Deniah Wells kept the ball in play with a header, and Gracie Bowers buried it into the net for the third goal of the game.

The Lancers went into the break with a 3-0 lead.

Badawiya opened up the second half with back-to-back goals, as Karley Weeks and Makayla Soll were both put down for assists on each goal.

Danielle Gordon produced the goal of the game at the 64th minute, hitting a shot well outside the box to float it over the keeper's head.

As the game started to wind down, the Lancers earned a free-kick just inside the midfield line, as Madeline Milby played a wonderful ball into the box, and Jayden Ramirez put a header on it for the final goal of the game.

The Lancers finished the game outshooting the Cougars 39-3, as Romy Salvador recorded her fourth shutout of the season. Salvador is now tied for sixth all-time in career shutouts with 11.

"We know the season is a marathon, not a sprint," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "We want to continue focusing on the aspects of the game we can control each week; work rate, executions, and performance. While concurrently building momentum from one game to the next. This weekend we certainly added to that. It was great to see the goals and assists spread out among so many players. Our defense was solid. We're getting sharper each week. Now we begin preparing for UVU next week."

UP NEXT:

The Lancers hit the road next week to take on Utah Valley in Orem, Utah, on March 11 and March 13. The games are set for 5 p.m. and 12 p.m., respectively.
