CBU Closes out WAC Series with Sacramento State

RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University baseball wrapped up its Western Athletic Conference series versus Sacramento State on Sunday at Totman Stadium.

The Hornets came away with the 14-1 win to split the series with the Lancers. CBU brings its record to 31-13 overall and 23-5 in the WAC, while Sac State improves to 28-18, 19-13. A Grand Canyon win on Sunday would secure itself a series sweep of Dixie State and put it in a first-place tie with CBU in the conference standings.

Harrison Spohn led the Lancers with a 2-for-4 performance on Sunday that included a double and run scored. Damon Keith and Nick Plaia both extended their hitting streaks to 15 games.

It's tied with Luke Navigato (2019) and Tommy Bell (2017) for the fourth longest hitting streak in CBU's NCAA era, with that record being 22 games from Bryce Macy (2016-17). A 17-game hitting streak would rank top-10 in the Lancers' modern era.

Sacramento State did most of its damage with home runs, as it hit four on the day.

The Lancers scored their run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Spohn led off the inning with a double and took third on a single from Plaia. Mitchel Simon drove in CBU's first run of the game and his eighth RBI of the weekend with a sacrifice fly to left field.

UP NEXT

The Lancers will need head to New Mexico for a four-game WAC series at NM State next weekend. The series will begin Friday with a scheduled first pitch at 2 p.m. Pacific. Saturday's doubleheader will start at noon and Sunday at 11 a.m.
