Lancers Take Roadrunners into Double Overtime, Remain Unbeaten

BAKERSFIELD, CA – Aiming to keep its hot start to the season going, California Baptist University men's soccer played 110 minutes in Bakersfield, ultimately leaving with a 1-1 draw against the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners.
"Playing on the road against a tough opponent is never easy, but to do it down a man for over 60 minutes and walk away feeling like we probably should have won shows just how good of a team we can be," said Head Coach Coe Michaelson after the match. "I'm very happy with the commitment the guys had out there to compete, and if that is the approach we take every night we will be happy with the results more often than not."
The result pushes CBU's record to 1-0-1 on the young season while CSU Bakersfield is still in search of its first win after now starting the season 0-2-1. The Lancers and the Roadrunners had split a pair of games previously, with the series edge still up for grabs after today's stalemate.
Both teams ripped off seven shots in the first half, though neither could find the back of the net. The Roadrunners put two on frame, challenging starting goalkeeper Evan Ince and his defensive line, but the Lancers held strong.
The second half began with an unfortunate second-yellow card for the Lancers in the 48th minute, forcing them to play with just 10 men for the remainder of the contest. Nevertheless, CBU netted the first goal of the game as Brian Gonzalez claimed his second goal of the season to put the Lancers up 1-0.
CSU Bakersfield would respond quickly, leveling the score just three minutes later.
The game would eventually make its way into sudden victory overtime where both teams would connect on menacing shots, but none would prove to be the difference maker.
Gonzalez made his only shot of the night count, while Thomas Beecham, Luis Mueller, and Emiel Deconinck put one shot on target each. Ince made two saves in his 45 minutes of action while Gage Rogers played the final 65 minutes of the game.
