NORCO --- California Baptist University opened Western Athletic Conference play on Saturday, as the Lancers took down the Redhawks of Seattle U in a 1-0 shutout victory.
With the shutout, the Lancers start conference play undefeated and improve to 3-4-1 on the season. Seattle U, which entered the contest as the WAC defending champions, fall to 6-3-1 on the year. CBU also moves to 2-1 all-time against the Redhawks when on home soil.
The Lancers controlled most of the first half as the home team strung together multiple runs and kept possession of the ball in the attacking half of the field.
CBU was relentless with its attack, keeping the Redhawks' defense on its toes and SU keeper Jessica Berlin plenty busy.
After a handful of shots, the Lancers finally broke through at the 38th minute when Lauryn White played a cross inside the box. Madison Sonerholm was waiting at the near post and flicked the ball into the net for the game's lone goal.

It marks Sonerholm's first goal of the season for the Lancers and the second of her career.
The Redhawks looked for every opportunity they could muster up in the second half, but the Lancers' backline, with the help of Romy Salvador, kept SU off the board.
CBU finished the game out-shooting the Redhawks, 13-9, and Salvador recorded a save for the three shots on frame she faced.
The shutout gives Salvador her 16th in her career and puts her one away from moving into a tie for third all-time in career shutouts.
Karley Weeks paced the Lancers' offense with five shots, while Sonerholm recorded two and Morgan Witz, Jayden Ramirez, Neleah Dunlap, Deniah Wells, Makayla Soll, and Vanessa Evans all recorded one apiece.
"I'm really proud of this team," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "The smallest margins separate the top teams in this conference. Those margins are outworking your opponent, winning the 1v1 battles, ball-winning, shape, and heart, and we did that today. This was an important performance for us as we started conference play. The WAC is a whole new season. Results come down to consistent performances that demonstrate grit, focused execution, and heart. This is a good step forward for our young squad, and we can see the growth and maturity in this process. The season is a marathon, not a sprint, so we need to focus on controlling the controllables one game at a time. We'll enjoy this result tonight and go back to work on Monday to prepare for our next opponent."
