RIVERSIDE - The California Baptist University women's soccer team battled Abilene Christian for 90 minutes in a 0-0 draw in a key Western Athletic Conference match-up on Sunday afternoon.
CBU was the aggressor most of the day, outshooting ACU, 19-10. The Lancers also had eight shots on goal compared to four for the Wildcats. Both squads had four corners each.
"Defensively we were solid, offensively we created a number of dangerous scoring opportunities," said CBU head coach Kristen St. Clair. "Unfortunately, we came up just short on the finishing end."
Today's match was important as the end of the regular season nears with only the top six teams in the WAC standings advancing to the WAC Tournament at Seattle U in early November. CBU is postseason eligible for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history after completing a four-year transition to the DI ranks. The winner of the WAC Tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NCAAs.
"Obviously we wanted three points out of this game, but coming away with a point is still important as we head into the final stretch of conference play," added St. Clair. "We'll get back to work in training to prepare for a challenging two-game road trip this next weekend."
CBU moves to 6-3-4 overall and 3-2-2 (11 points) in WAC play while ACU is 4-6-3 and remains winless in conference competition at 0-4-2.
If the season ended today, the Lancers would find themselves in the tournament field as the No. 6 seed. CBU has four conference matches remaining on the schedule.
The Lancers will be on the road next week with games at Southern Utah on Friday at 2 p.m. and Utah Tech on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
