Cedar City, Utah - California Baptist University women's soccer battled Southern Utah, a new member of the Western Athletic Conference, in a 0-0 tie on Friday afternoon.
"I thought we played with a lot of heart and had good moments on both sides of the ball," said CBU head coach Kristen St. Clair. "We generated some great scoring opportunities and largely controlled the game. We certainly played well enough for the three points, but credit the SUU goalkeeper (Megan Short) as she came up with some big time saves to keep us off the board. Now we turn our attention to recovery and preparation for our Sunday game."
Statistically, the match was fairly balanced. CBU outshot SUU 17-13 in total with a 9-7 advantage with shots on goal. SUU had five corners compared to CBU's three.
Today's result is the fifth tie of the season and second consecutive for the Lancers. CBU now sits at 6-3-5 overall and 3-2-3 in WAC play. The Lancers did pick up a coveted point toward the WAC standings and now sits in sixth place with 12 points as of today. Southern Utah is now 9-3-2 overall and in fifth place at 4-2-2 (14 pts.) in the league. Trailing CBU in seventh place is preseason WAC favorite Grand Canyon at 7-5-2 overall and 3-3-1 (10 pts.). The Lancers defeated GCU, 3-1, back on Sept. 17.
Next up for CBU is the final road match of the regular season at first-place Utah Tech (10-2-1; 6-0-1 WAC) on Sunday.
GCU and Utah Tech play against each other tonight at 6:30 p.m.
