St. George, Utah - California Baptist University women's soccer picked up a critically important 1-0 victory at Western Athletic Conference co-leader Utah Tech on Sunday afternoon.
"At this point in the season, every game is a must perform game," said CBU head coach Kristen St. Clair. "Utah Tech is a good team and this is a tough place to play. I'm really proud of the teams grit, resilience and fortitude today. This was a full team effort to get the three points today."
Lancer junior Marcella Brooks powered in the game-winner late in the first half, giving CBU the 1-0 advantage. Brooks now has two goals on the season. McKenna Ray was credited with the assist, her second on the year.
"On the goal, McKenna Ray sent in a great cross and Samantha Behnke flicked the ball onto Marcella Brooks," said St. Clair. "Marcella's first shot was blocked, but she did a great job to collect the ball and score."
"Offensively, Lourdes (Bosch), Karley (Weeks) and Frida (Murrieta) did a great job connecting with the strikers, creating numerous scoring opportunities," added St. Clair. "Defensively, Noa and our backline line were fantastic. Our defense has put together 341 straight shutout minutes verses our opponents. Our defensive midfielders, Jayden (Ramirez), Makayla (Soll) and Natalia (Castro) did a great job winning balls and moving the ball around."
The Lancers have not given up a goal in the last three contests as the last goal CBU has allowed was in a 3-1 win over Tarleton State on Oct. 14.
Entering the match, Utah Tech was in a three-way tie with Seattle U and Utah Valley for first place in the WAC standings. With the win, CBU is now 7-3-5 and 4-2-3 in league play, holding on the sixth place in the standings. Utah Tech drops to 10-4-1 overall and 6-2-1 against WAC competition. The top six teams in the WAC standings at the end of the regular season will qualify to participate in the WAC postseason tournament.
"We'll enjoy this result tonight and begin preparing for our next opponent," said St. Clair.
CBU's regular season will conclude in Riverside at the new CBU Soccer Complex with a pair of matches against ninth-place Sam Houston on Thursday at 7 p.m. and fourth-place New Mexico State on Saturday at 7 p.m.
