Edinburg, Texas – California Baptist University women's soccer concluded a stretch of three consecutive road matches with a 1-1 draw against Western Athletic Conference foe The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Sunday afternoon at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Lancers were first to get on the scoreboard when senior Ari Coronado in the 12th minute had a shot that initially hit the far post that rolled then along the goal line before eventually hitting the other post and was ruled a goal before the UTRGV goalkeeper Emma Loov dove on top of it.
Coronado is now tied with two teammates, fellow seniors Lourdes Bosch and Karley Weeks, with a team-leading four goals this season. Bosch was credited with the assist on the play after navigating through several UTRGV defenders before finding an open Coronado.
"I thought we started well," said CBU head coach Kristen St. Clair. "Ari scored a nice left footed goal, assisted by Lourdes. We controlled the game and should have scored three to four goals with all the chances on goal we created. Unfortunately, we struggled to finish those chances."
CBU goalkeeper Noa Schumacher, a graduate student, collected five saves on the day before existing the match in the 80th minute after a hard collision with a player from UTRGV. Freshman Mikayla O'Brien finished the match at goal for the Lancers. Loov of UTRGV registered three saves.
Team stats were rather balanced with CBU taking 10 shots (five on goal) and UTRGV with nine shots (six on goal). The Lancers had seven corners to UTRGV's five.
"Our opponent had one opportunity all game from a missed clearance and they capitalized on our mistake," said St. Clair. "While we had good moments, we still need to be sharper and more disciplined in the little things we can control."
CBU moves to 5-3-3 overall and 2-2-1 in WAC play. UTRGV is now 2-8-3 and 0-3-3 after three straight ties.
"After a long trip, it will be good to get home to rest, get back on the training field, continue to get better and prepare for our next game," added St. Clair.
The Lancers return home to the CBU Soccer Stadium for a pair of contests, hosting WAC matches with Tarleton State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Abilene Christian on Sunday at 1 p.m. Tarleton and ACU are both winless in WAC competition so far this season.
CBU fans have provided strong support at the first-year facility, averaging 616 spectators per match this season. As of October 7, CBU's average attendance is ranked fourth in the 11-member WAC and 73rd overall nationally among 350 programs in the country. CBU has enjoyed success on the field in Riverside with a 3-1-2 record, including a three match winning streak where the Lancers have outscored their opponents 6-1.
