SEATTLE --- In their first trip to the Western Athletic Conference Tournament, California Baptist University battled the New Mexico State Aggies for 110 hard-fought minutes before falling 1-0 in double overtime.
The Lancers out-shot the Aggies 16-9, with senior Lourdes Bosch taking six shots, putting three on goal. Goalkeeper Noa Schumacher recorded four saves on the night and came up with a spectacular diving save in the second half to keep the game tied at zero.
The Aggies scored their lone goal in the first overtime in the 97th minute, which ended up being the game-winner.
The Lancers' final push came at the end of the second overtime when Lauryn White fired a shot just high at the Aggies goalkeeper, hitting the bottom of the crossbar and bounced centimeters shy of leveling the game. The play went to a video review but was confirmed as no goal after several minutes of scrutiny.
The Lancers finish their season 8-5-5 with a 5-2-3 home record, recording eight shutouts while scoring 33 goals. The Lancers had a season-high six goals against Sam Houston on October 27 at the CBU Soccer Stadium and notable home victories at Grand Canyon and Seattle in conference play.
Recently the conference recognized both Lourdes Bosch and Taylor Summit by including them on the postseason All-WAC teams, with Bosch earning first-team honors while Summit landed with the second team.
Goalkeeper Noa Schumacher led the conference in saves per game with 5.93 and finished second in total saves with 89. Schumacher also had four shutouts which ranked sixth in the WAC. Lourdes Bosch finished the season with a team-high 19 points on seven goals and five assists, finishing top-10 in the conference in shots, goals, and assists. Ari Coronado, Karley Weeks, and Marcella Brooks all finished the season with double-digit shots on goal.
"As disappointing as this is for our team, I am really proud of our team's heart and fight today! Soccer is a humbling game sometimes, you can control a majority of the match, and the ball just does not bounce your way on the day. We had two great opportunities hit the crossbar, and two 1v.1's on the keeper, forcing her to make two big saves to keep it out of the net. Our coaching staff is proud of this team's heart and character as they continually fought through an unbelievable amount of adversity this fall with all our injuries. I am so proud of and thankful for our seniors. Their collegiate careers wrapped up a little sooner than we wanted, but their legacy and investment in this program are undeniable. They endured four years of not being postseason eligible even when they earned the right to go based on their winning records. Their investment in the success of our program and culture is locked in. Our young players stepped up big time this fall, and we are very excited for the future of CBU Women's Soccer."
