WBB PREVIEW: Basketball Splits Road and Home Games This Weekend
2/14/2022 3:34:00 PM | Women's Basketball
RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University women's basketball improved to 18-5 on the season and 9-3 in Western Athletic Conference play after securing a pair of double-digit road wins in Texas last week. The Lancers are tied for second place in the conference standings with Grand Canyon ahead of Thursday's decisive matchup.
Ane Olaeta and Trinity San Antonio felt right at home in Texas and played well enough to earn WAC Player and Freshman of the Week honors, respectively. Olaeta's fourth career award came after she averaged 16.5 points on 60 percent shooting from the field and also dished out seven assists and grabbed five-and-a-half rebounds per game.
Olaeta hit another historic milestone during the road trip, becoming the first player in program history to surpass 800 career assists. She is the NCAA leader (Divisions I-III) in the category among active players, with second place currently sitting at 638.
San Antonio secured her second FOTW award after being a force off the bench in both games, averaging 11 points, two-and-a-half rebounds and a steal in each game. This is just the second award sweep of the season in the WAC, done first by Jamie Bonnarens and Bella Earle from Abilene Christian on January 3.
Caitlyn Harper continues to lead the league in scoring with an average of 18.4 points-per-game. Harper has scored in double-digits in every game so far this season, topping 20-points nine times. She's not just an offensive threat, she's also averaging 1.4 blocks and 1.5 steals per game, respectively.
GAME INFORMATION – Thursday, Feb. 17
Opponent: Grand Canyon
Time: 5 p.m. Pacific
Location: Phoenix

The rematch from just two weeks ago is sure to be a must-watch event as the two teams are again playing for sole possession of second place in the conference standings. On the surface, the difference between second and third place doesn't sound like much, but it is the difference between needing to win two or three games to take the WAC Tournament title in March.
To avoid repeating history, the Lancers will look to improve their field goal percentage, which should get a boost with Britney Thomas back in the lineup after missing the first meeting with GCU this season. CBU will also look to keep turnovers down as the Lopes live and die on their ability to create empty possessions for their opponents.
GAME INFORMATION – Saturday, Feb. 19
Opponent: Seattle U

The Redhawks currently reside at the bottom of the WAC standings at 3-10 in conference play and with a season record of 8-16. Thanks in part to COVID rescheduling, Seattle is in the midst of playing five games in five different cities in just 12 days, culminating in the upcoming contest against CBU in Riverside.
The Lancers currently hold a four-game winning streak against Seattle U, most recently winning as Harper and Olaeta each went for over 20 points against the Redhawks earlier this season in Seattle. Defensively, CBU did a good job containing SU from distance in January, allowing the Redhawks a three-point clip of just 30.4 percent (7-23).
