Holley Delivers CBU's First Walk-Off Win of 2022

RIVERSIDE – Reeve Holley delivered the first walk-off win on the young season for California Baptist University baseball, as the Lancers defeated Coppin State 6-5 on Saturday night at Totman Stadium.

Holley delivered the win in his second career at-bat after he came into the game as a pinch runner in the eighth. He went into center field in the ninth and stayed in to hit in the bottom half after the Eagles tied the game at 5-5 in the inning. CBU secures the series win, as it now improves to 2-0 while Coppin State drops to 0-2 to start the season.

The Lancers denied several CSU comeback attempts in the game. Coppin State first tied the game at 4-4 with a two-run eighth inning. CJ Masciel also came through in the clutch and broke that tie with an RBI double in the eighth inning.

CBU secures the series win, as it now improves to 2-0 while Coppin State drops to 0-2 to start the season. Chad Castillo (2-for-5) and Harrison Spohn (2-for-3) both had two-hit games and have done so in both games so far this year.

Castillo hit a two-run bomb for the Lancers' first home run of the year, while Spohn scored the winning run after he led off the ninth with a double to deep center.

California Baptist was opportunistic on the base paths, as it stole a total of eight on the night. Masciel, Castillo and Spohn each stole two bags.

Drew Necochea was sharp in his first start on the mound for CBU. He held Coppin State to just one run on four hits, no walks and three strikes over the first five innings.

Coppin State got on the board in the fifth inning to cut CBU's lead in half, 2-1, but the Lancers bounced back with two runs in the sixth. An error and wild pitch allowed Trevor Cadd to score and a Martin plated Josh Paino with a sacrifice fly to center field to give the home team a 4-1 edge.

The Eagles kept coming, with a solo homer in the seventh and two-run eighth tying the game at 4-4. It all set up the heroics for Masciel in the eighth. Michael Carpentier drew a four-pitch walk to start the inning before Paino sacrifice bunted him over to second.

Masciel went the other way with an 0-1 pitch to score Holley, the pinch runner, easily and give CBU the lead again, 5-4. It was Holley's turn in the ninth, as he took a 2-2 pitch up the middle facing a 2-2 count and two outs.

UP NEXT
The Lancers and Eagles will conclude their series on Sunday at noon back at Totman Stadium. CBU will play its first 10 games at home this season, with Purdue Fort Wayne (Feb. 25-27) visiting Riverside next week before Western Athletic Conference play opens when Grand Canyon comes to town (March 4-6).
