WBB Preview: Lancers Head Back To Texas For Battles Against Lamar, UTRGV
2/7/2022 12:05:00 PM | Women's Basketball
RIVERSIDE – The California Baptist University women's basketball team will visit Beaumont, Texas, for the first time in program history this Thursday to take on the Lamar Cardinals before heading south to take on the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in the team's final road series of the season. The Lancers recently split a pair of home games against NM State and Grand Canyon to move into third place in the conference standings with a 16-5 overall record and a 7-3 league tally.
Though Stephen F. Austin is in control of their own regular-season destiny at this point by virtue of a 10-0 conference record, including wins over the second and third-place teams, the Lancers are far from throwing in the towel. CBU has a rematch with the Lopes on February 17, which could be a factor in conference tournament seeding and WNIT participation.
Caitlyn Harper continued her conference-leading scoring rate, dropping 18 and 20 points, respectively, keeping her season average at 18.7 points per game, 2.3 points more than second-place Josie Williams from Utah Valley. Freshman Trinity San Antonio brought the heat in her first game against NM State, scoring a game-high 20 points to go with four assists, three rebounds, two steals and a block.

The Cardinals will enter Thursday's game with an 11-8 record on the year and a 6-4 total in the WAC in their inaugural season. Those records don't convey the hot streak LU is on, though, having won four of their last five and six of their last eight games.
Lamar is led by a pair of 13+ point average scorers in Akasha Davis and Sabria Dean. Akasha also leads the team in rebounding, grabbing 6.9 boards per game, and field goal percentage, shooting at a 59.2% clip for the season. Statistically, the Cardinals rely on solid offensive outputs to win their games, as they rank in the bottom four in the conference in major defensive categories such as rebounding, steals, and blocked shots.

The Vaqueros begin the week with a 9-14 record (5-6 WAC), with a game scheduled against Seattle U ahead of the Lancers' arrival in Edinburg. UTRGV is led by Taylor Muff and Sara Bershers in scoring and rebounding, averaging 13.0 and 12.8 points and 7.0 and 5.9 rebounds per game, respectively. Muff is the only player to start all 23 games for the Vaqueros; she has played no less than 25 minutes in any of those starts, and went the full-40 against SFA and Sam Houston.
The Lancers hold a 4-2 series advantage against UTRGV, including wins in the last three-straight overall and two straight in the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Last season, Sydney Palma had a career game in Edinburg, catching fire for 23 points on 9-9 shooting from the field and 4-4 from deep. Harper (13 points, 11 rebounds) and Olaeta (13 points, 11 assists) added substantial double-doubles for one of the Lancers' most complete wins of the year.
