CBU Earns the Victory to Secure a Perfect UCR/CBU Classic Record

RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University softball closed out the UCR/CBU Classic with a dominant performance on both sides of the plate, run ruling Columbia 8-0 to complete a perfect 4-0 weekend. CBU closes the week with a 17-12 record and a plus-18 run differential during tournament play.
The Lancers had a stellar offensive week, collecting 18 extra-base hits during their seven games at Funk Stadium, six of which came from Katelyn Mangrello. The Huntington Beach junior ended the stretch hitting .667 (8-12) with five doubles, one home run, nine RBI and a slugging percentage of 1.333.
Nicole Stark also had a tremendous week, starting six of the Lancers' seven games at third where she was a defensive menace while hitting .353 (6-17), with four doubles, six RBI and three runs scored.
Three Lancer pitchers combined for a 5-2 week with an earned run average of 1.17 in 48 innings pitched. They allowed just 11 earned runs and struck out 32, holding opposing hitters to just a .164 batting average.
COLUMBIA
The rematch from Saturday's 7-3 CBU victory went very similarly in CBU's ability to score early and often. The Lancers plated run number one in the bottom of the second when Amanda Argomaniz smacked her team leading 16th RBI of the season, scoring Michaila Harrington, bringing her run total to an even dozen on the season.
CBU brought three across in the bottom of the third, beginning with Sydeny Soto's stand-up triple that scored Mia Alvarez. That is the team's fifth triple, already matching the total from both of the previous two seasons.
A fielding error allowed Soto to show off her heads-up base running, scoring from third for the third run of the game. Mangrello knocked her first run in later in the third on a sacrifice fly to score Raegan Cheyne.
After Schuring forced out the side on three-straight groundouts in the top of the inning, the still humming offense blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning. CBU loaded the bases with two outs and Mangrello due up next. The Lancers DP who is currently sporting a six-game hit streak, stepped into the batter's box and smashed the second pitch she saw for another double, this time reaching the left center wall, clearing the bases and giving the Lancers a 7-0 lead.
The Lancers would have to wait until the sixth inning to put the game away, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Before pinch hitter Kenzie Yamakoshi could even see a hittable pitch, the Lions starter bounced one off of home plate, sending it sailing towards the backstop, allowing more than enough time for the speedy Cheyne to score from third to end the game.
Starting pitcher Jordan Schuring had her best outing as a Lancer, holding Columbia to just two hits, zero free bases and three strikeouts in a shortened complete game effort. Her season ERA drops to 2.33 after earning her second win of the season.

With their 14-game homestand behind them, the Lancers head back onto the road for four games this week, starting with a single game at Long Beach State on Tuesday at 2 p.m. After the single game against The Beach, CBU will open WAC play in Seattle against a Redhawks team who was voted in the Western Athletic Conference Coaches Preseason Poll to finish first in the West Division.
