CBU's Rally Falls Just Short Against Yale

CBU made things interesting right until the very end, as it put its leadoff runner on in the bottom of the ninth but could not pull off the wild comeback. The Lancers faced several daunting deficits on the night, including a game-high five runs, and pulled within a run on three different occasions but could never tie the game or take the lead.
It moves CBU's record to 12-5 on the year, while Yale improves to 7-5 and has now won five of its last six games. The Bulldogs are the preseason favorite in the Ivy League and have won or shared two of the last three Ivy League titles.

Russell Stevenson, Mitchel Simon, Ulises Caballero and Michael Carpentier each had two hits on Saturday. Caballero had four runs batted in, including a two-run homer, while Simon and Stevenson also doubled.
Three Lancers extended hitting streaks to more than five games on Saturday. Stevenson has 11-straight games with a hit, Harrison Spohn has eight in a row and David Martin has a seven-game streak.

CBU found itself in a 3-0 hole after the top of the second inning, but the Lancers got on the board in the bottom of the frame. Shayne Simpson led off the inning with a single and then moved to third with two outs after consecutive grounders. Simon brought him home with a clutch 0-2 single up the middle.

Yale went back up by three, 4-1, with another run in the third. Caballero cut the deficit down to one, 4-3, with a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth. Jake Brown (walk) and Simon (double) scored on the play.
The Bulldogs then scored four runs in the fifth to take an 8-3 advantage. The Lancers kept on coming, though, and cut the lead back down to one with two runs in the sixth and seventh. Caballero hit a two-run homer in the sixth, while Josh Paino and Stevenson laced an RBI double and single, respectively, in the seventh to make it an 8-7 game.

Yale got the response it needed with three more runs in the eighth to go back up by four, 11-7. CBU made it a one-run game once again with three runs in the bottom of the eighth after an error, singles for CJ Masciel and Carpentier, a two-run double from Spohn and an RBI grounder from Chad Castillo.

The Lancers and Bulldogs will conclude their series on Sunday at noon at Totman Stadium. CBU will hit the road next week for a non-conference, mid-week game at 12th-ranked Texas Tech on Tuesday, March 22 at 4:30 p.m. Pacific and a three-game Western Athletic Conference set at NM State Friday, March 26 through Sunday, March 27.
