CBU Opens GCC Play with Home Battle Versus Concordia

RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University women's water polo opened Golden Coast Conference play in a home game against Concordia on Wednesday night.
CBU battled back from a two-goal deficit, but fell to the Eagles on a score of 6-5 at the Lancer Aquatics Center. The Lancers move to 12-10 overall and 0-1 in the GCC, while the Eagles improve to 8-9, 2-2.
It was a defensive struggle all game. Madison Gerg finished with eight saves and four steals in the cage for CBU. Melinna Galbraith logged three assists in the game while Jamie Hutton also had three points on two goals and an assist.
Kira O'Donell also had a goal and an assist for the Lancers to move her scoring streak to 20-straight games. CBU also got goals from Cayleigh Carter and Taylor Frandsen.
Concordia score the first two goals of the game and led 3-1 about two minutes into the second quarter. The Lancers rattled off three-straight goals to take their first lead of the game, 4-3, with 39 seconds left in the third quarter.
Galbraith assisted on the Lancers' first two goals of the game from Hutton and Frandsen in the second quarter. O'Donell notched the other second-quarter score to tie the game 3-3 at halftime.
Carter scored CBU's go-ahead goal late in the third quarter, while Hutton capped the scoring for CBU with 4:08 left in the fourth quarter to force a 5-5 tie.
The Eagles ended the game on a 3-1 run and scored the game-winning goal with 90 seconds left to lock up the 6-5 win.

California Baptist will welcome Santa Clara to the Lancer Aquatics Center on Friday for a 3 p.m. game, as the Lancers' three-game homestand ends. CBU will then travel for road games at GCC foes Fresno State and Pacific on April 1 and 2, respectively.
