3/25/2022 4:56:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
RIVERSIDE – A big second quarter and a hat trick from Kira O'Donell was not enough to lead California Baptist University women's water polo past Santa Clara on Friday afternoon at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
The Broncos pulled out the 9-8 Golden Coast Conference win, despite a game-high four goals and three drawn ejections from O'Donell. Jamie Hutton also had two assists and three field blocks in the game for CBU, which got a goal, assist and drawn ejection from Vicky Martinez. Madison Gerg had a career-high 14 saves in the cage.
California Baptist moves to 12-11 on the year and 0-2 in GCC play, while Santa Clara has now won four of its last five to improve to 7-12, 2-1.
SCU got out to a 3-2 lead in the first quarter, but CBU scored three-straight goals three-and-a-half minutes into the second quarter to take a 5-3 lead. Maddie Schwegler started the run with a strong goal from center and O'Donell then scored two in a row.
Santa Clara got a goal back, but the Lancers scored two of the final goals to finish off a 5-2 second quarter run. O'Donell scored her fourth with three minutes left before halftime and Caelan Loroff knocked one down from distance with two minutes to go.
Martinez capped the scoring for CBU with 4:22 left in the third quarter, as SCU closed out the game on a 4-1 run.
