
Lancers Run Winning Streak to Five Games with Doubleheader Sweep at Claremont Convergence

CLAREMONT – California Baptist University women's water polo ran its winning streak to five-straight games, with a doubleheader sweep to open the Claremont Convergence on Friday.
The Lancers defeated Ottawa (Ariz.) on a score of 17-12 to start the day and then took down Biola, 19-12, to close things out at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Axelrood Pool. CBU has now won six of its last seven games to improve to an even 9-9 this season, while Ottawa drops to 5-13 and Biola to 3-8.
Maddie Schwegler scored hat tricks in both games and a team-high seven on the day, while Vicky Martinez had six goals in the doubleheader. Jamie Hutton posted a team-high 10 points (six assists and four goals) and six steals, while Kira O'Donell had nine points (five goals, four assists).
California Baptist will wrap up the Claremont Convergence with two more games Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer's Haldeman Pool. The Lancers will face Wittenberg and Augustana at 10:15 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
OTTAWA
Eleven Lancers scored and five had multi-goal games in CBU's opening win over Ottawa. Schwegler scored a first-half hat trick, while Celeste Almendariz, Melinna Galbraith, Morgan Baker and Martinez all scored twice.
Galbraith (two assists) and Hutton (three assists, one goal) each had a team-high four points in the game. O'Donell (two assists, one goal) and Lahela Rosario (three assists) each had three points, as well. Julia Miller had seven saves and an assist from goal.
The Lancers opened the game on a 3-0 run on goals from Galbraith, Schwegler and Almendariz. Ottawa fought back to tie the game at 3-3 with 2:10 left in the first quarter, but CBU responded by scoring nine of the 11 goals to take a 12-5 lead into halftime.
Hutton and O'Donell scored in the final two minutes of the first quarter to give CBU a 5-3 edge going into the second. Schwegler scored back-to-back goals in 31 seconds to complete her first-half hat trick a minute-and-a-half into the second quarter. Martinez also scored a pair in the frame, while Baker, Almendariz and Abby Mammen each scored before halftime to give the Lancers a 12-5 advantage.
BIOLA
Schwegler, Martinez and O'Donell all scored four goals for CBU against Biola, while Hutton also scored a hat trick. Hutton (three assists, three steals) and O'Donell (two assists) both had six points in the game, as well. Madison Gerg had six saves, two steals and an assist in the cage.
It was a close game in the early going, with the score tied at 5-5 at the end of the first quarter. No team led by more than one until the Lancers took a 10-8 lead into halftime. Both O'Donell and Martinez had three goals through the first 16 minutes.
The Eagles fought back within a goal in the third quarter, 11-10, but CBU closed out the game on an 8-1 run. Schwegler scored all four of her goals in that final run.
