Lancers Host Aztecs for Senior Day Battle

RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University women's water polo celebrated its Senior Day with its final regular-season and home game with a Golden Coast Conference contest against 20^th-ranked San Diego State.

The Lancers battled back from a six-goal deficit but SDSU came away with the 13-9 win, despite a 5-1 run from CBU late. Six different players scored for the Lancers, while Jamie Hutton, Kira O'Donell and Dora Lehoczky each netted a pair.

It moves CBU's record to 12-16 this season and 0-7 in GCC play, while San Diego State improves to 12-14, 4-3.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Aztecs scored the first two goals of the game, but Hutton scored twice in the first quarter to make it a one-goal SDSU lead, 3-2, going into the second. O'Donell scored both her goals back-to-back within 45 seconds of the second frame but the Lancers went into halftime down 7-4.

San Diego State looked like it would cruise to the end as it took a 10-4 lead with 5:50 to go in the third, but goals from Vicky Martinez and Lehoczky cut the deficit down to 10-6 going into the fourth quarter.

It was the start of a 5-1 run from the Lancers, with Melinna Galbraith and Maddie Schwegler scoring within that run, while Lehoczky added another. The final goal from Lehoczky prompted an Aztec timeout as the lead dipped to 11-9 with 3:14 to play.

SENIOR DAY
Seven Lancers celebrated their Senior Day on Thursday: Kinga Wisniewska, Nicole Rhoads, Caelan Loroff, Lahela Rosario, Madison Gerg, Martinez and O'Donell. The group helped lead CBU to 62 wins, including seven ranked wins, and final top-25 rankings in the NCAA over the last four years, including a program-best No. 17 ranking in 2021.

UP NEXT
CBU is not done with home games quite yet, as it will host the Golden Coast Conference Tournament on Friday, April 22 through Sunday, April 24. The Lancers will face regular-season champion and eighth-ranked Fresno State in the first round on Friday, April 22 at 4 p.m.
