
WWP PREVIEW: Lancers Host GCC Championships for First Time This Weekend

RIVERSIDE – For the first time ever, California Baptist University women's water polo will host the Golden Coast Conference Championships this weekend at the Lancer Aquatics Center. The conference tournament champion will earn the lone automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championships.
The Lancers open the GCC Championships against No. 1 overall seed Fresno State on Friday, April 22 at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs are the defending GCC champions and are currently ranked eighth in the NCAA with a 16-7 overall record and 7-0 conference mark.
Pacific (12-10, 6-1) secured the No. 2 seed, Loyola Marymount comes in at No. 3 (14-11, 5-2) and San Diego State is seeded fourth (12-15, 4-3), followed by Azusa Pacific (8-15, 2-5); Santa Clara (7-19, 2-5); Concordia (9-12, 2-5) and CBU (12-16, 0-7).
Friday's winner between CBU and Fresno State will advance to face the winner between the four and five seeds, San Diego State and Azusa Pacific, in the second semifinal game on Saturday, April 23 at 4 p.m. The fifth and seventh-place games will be played on Saturday, April 23 at 10 a.m. and noon, respectively.
A LOOK AT THE LANCERS
Offense has been CBU's strength overall this season, as it averages 11.1 goals a game, while giving up 10.5 goals a game. The Lancers' defense is coming into form, though, by holding its opponents an average of 9.8 goals a game over its last 10 games.
Attackers Kira O'Donell (96) and Jamie Hutton (93) lead the Lancers by a wide margin with 90-plus points each, but CBU has a dangerous inside-out attack with two-meters Maddie Schwegler and Vicky Martinez drawing a lot of attention down low. Schwegler and Martinez rank third and fourth on the team with 36 and 32 goals on shooting percentages of .537 and .427, respectively.
Taylor Frandsen is the primary sprinter for the Lancers with 57 wins on a .613 winning percentage (57-36). Kyndall Burrell is CBU's stopper at two-meter defender.
Goalie Madison Gerg has been the primary presence in the cage for CBU ever since GCC play began. She blocked a career-high 14 shots against Santa Clara and then had 12 saves the next game versus Fresno State. Overall, she has 129 saves on a .383 percentage and 24 steals this year.

The exciting conference includes Azusa Pacific University, Concordia, Fresno State, Loyola Marymount, San Diego State, Santa Clara and the University of Pacific, along with CBU. Two conference members came late, with Concordia joining in 2015-16 and Fresno State in 2016-17.
Pacific has won a conference-high three GCC titles since 2014, followed by Loyola Marymount with two. San Diego State and Fresno State have each won one conference championship. The Aztecs have made a conference-high five appearances in the championship game, while Pacific and LMU have four each.
CBU has six top-four finishes at the GCC Championships over the last seven tournaments. The Lancers' best performance earned them third place in 2016 and have won their first-round matchup twice in 2015-16.
