CBU Opens WAC Series Versus Utah Valley

RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University baseball opened its Western Athletic Conference West Division series versus Utah Valley on Friday night at Totman Stadium.

David Martin and Michael Carpentier extended their hitting streaks to 16 and nine games, respectively, but the Lancers dropped game one to the Wolverines on a 10-2 score. Chad Castillo had two hits in the game, while Martin and Mitchel Simon each had doubles. CBU moves to 23-12 on the season and 9-7 in WAC play, while UVU improves to 15-23, 8-11.

Ryan Silva put together a good outing on the mound in relief. He gave up just one run on two hits, a walk and struck out three. The senior got better as he went along and retired nine of the final 10 batters he faced.

Carson Olsen allowed just one run in two innings on a hit, two walks and two strikeouts.

Utah Valley scored the first nine runs of the game, with at least one run in the first five innings. Josiah Chavez got CBU on the board with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. CBU scored its second run after doubles from Simon and Martin (RBI) in the ninth.

CBU also got some nice defensive plays from Mitchel Simon at third and Josh Paino at shortstop.

CBU and Utah Valley will continue its series on Saturday, April 23 at 5 p.m. It will come to a close on Sunday, April 24 at noon. The Lancers are back on the road next weekend at Sacramento State.
