
Lancers Battle Back at Azusa Pacific

GLENDORA – California Baptist University women's water polo battled back from a three-goal deficit at halftime at Azusa Pacific to extend the game to overtime. The Lancers fell just short of the comeback victory in a 14-12 overtime loss to the Cougars.
Kira O'Donell scored a hat trick in the game, while Jamie Hutton had five assists, four drawn ejections and two steals. Taylor Frandsen netted two goals and won two sprints and Dora Lehoczky had a goal, assist and steal. O'Donell has now scored in 25-straight games and has 13 hat tricks on the year for CBU, which is now 12-15 on the year and 0-6 in Golden Coast Conference play. APU improves to 8-14 and 2-4 in conference.
The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first two minutes and pushed its lead to 7-4 at the break. Lehoczky, Cayleigh Carter, Melinna Galbraith and O'Donell scored in the first half for CBU.
The Lancers won the second half 6-3 as they held Azusa Pacific scoreless over a near 12-minute span. O'Donell and Kyndall Burrell scored back-to-back goals two minutes into the third quarter to cut the deficit to one, 7-6.
APU stopped the run with a goal 10 seconds later, but CBU scored four of the next five goals with one each from Frandsen, O'Donell, Morgan Baker and Vicky Martinez. The goal from Martinez gave the Lancers their first lead of the game, 10-9, with 3:42 left in regulation.
CBU nearly came up with a huge stop in the final minute as Gerg made a one-on-one save for her 10th of the game, but the redirect went down off the crossbar and right behind her. A Cougar rushed to the ball and pushed it just in over the line to tie the game with 61 seconds to play.
Frandsen and Maddie Schwegler each scored in overtime, but Azusa Pacific scored four goals in the extra session to secure the win.

California Baptist will wrap up the regular season with its Senior Day game versus 20th-ranked San Diego State on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Lancer Aquatics Center. The Lancers will then host the GCC Tournament on Friday, April 22 through Sunday, April 24.
CBU will face regular-season champion and eighth-ranked Fresno State in the first round on Friday, April 22 at 4 p.m.
