Chavez Collects Four Hits in Finale at Sacramento State

SACRAMENTO – California Baptist University baseball got off to a hot start but dropped the series finale at Sacramento State on a 7-4 score on Sunday.

The Lancers scored the first four runs, but the Hornets scored the final seven of the game to secure the win. CBU moves to 26-14 this season and 12-9 in the Western Athletic Conference West Division, while Sac State improves to 23-20, 13-11.

True freshman Josiah Chavez put together a career game with a 4-for-4 performance that included a two-run homer and two runs scored.

David Martin extended his hitting streak to 21 games on Sunday. A 22-game streak would tie for the second longest in the Lancers' modern era, while Aaron Seuss holds the record at 35 games.

Martin opened the scoring with a two-out, two-run single in the top of the second inning. Chavez and Shayne Simpson scored after they singled their way aboard with one out and both moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from CJ Masciel.

Chavez gave CBU a 4-0 lead with a two-run homer in the third inning. The Hornets made it a new ball game with four runs in the bottom of the third. They scored a run in the sixth, seven and eighth innings to take the win.

UP NEXT
The Lancers will play a mid-week game at UNLV at 2:05 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3, before returning home to host NM State next weekend (May 6-8). The WAC series with the Aggies will start at 6 p.m., 5 p.m. and noon each day.
