CLEVELAND – The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) released the Fall 2022 LEARFIELD Directors Cup Rankings on Thursday. In its first season of NCAA postseason eligibility, California Baptist University athletics finds itself ranked 1st among all Western Athletic Conference programs, and tied for 64th out of 363 eligible institutions, sharing the slot with West Virginia from the Big 12.
CBU Director of Athletics Tyler Mariucci had this to say about the remarkable achievement. "For our debut in the Division I LEARFIELD Directors Cup standings to be this successful is a testament to what we aim to accomplish at California Baptist University. To lead our conference and hold a top-64 position nationally in our first year of eligibility is a reflection of all the hard work that our campus leadership, student-athletes, coaches, and staff have put in, not only this season but since this process began five years ago. CBU has quickly become a nationally recognized brand of athletic excellence at the highest level in intercollegiate athletics".
After the Fall season, The Lancers are the highest-ranked Western Athletic Conference program, with Utah Valley as the next closest program, tied for 94th place. The Lancers' 97 points is the highest amount earned during the Fall season for any WAC team in the past 10 seasons. CBU's 64th-place ranking would be the top position in 15 of the other 30 conferences.
The LEARFIELD Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships. The Lancers' success on the cross country course and soccer pitch vaulted them to this early success.
The CBU women's cross country team paced the program by receiving 45 points for their National Championship run. The men's cross country team earned 27 points for their high finish in the NCAA West Regional race. And the men's soccer team earned the remaining 25 points for their run to the NCAA Tournament in November.
Please note that these results are not final and will continue to develop over the course of the Spring season. Complete results will be released after the final NCAA championship is awarded in June.
