RIVERSIDE – California Baptist finished hosting duties of The Joust tournament on Saturday, facing off with a pair of top-8 teams in Division I. Action started against No. 2 USC, with the Trojans taking that game 16-6. Play wrapped after the late game against No. 8 Long Beach State that saw The Beach end the tournament with a 16-8 victory over the Lancers. CBU closes the weekend with a 5-6 record in the still-young season.
GAME ONE: CBU 6 – USC 16
The defending national runners-up faced off with the Lancers in a midday tilt on Saturday. The Trojans jumped to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter and held a 10-3 advantage at the half. The Lancers rattled off three in a row in the fourth to make it 13-6, but the Trojans would tack on another three before the final horn.
Jamie Hutton scored a pair against the second-ranked Trojans, with Kyndall Burrell, Rayne Lopez, Dora Lehoczky, and Devyn Ruffer each netting one.
GAME TWO: CBU 8 – LONG BEACH STATE 16
The Tournament finale was a tight affair in the first quarter, but The Beach eventually built a 10-4 lead at the half. Cayleigh Carter and Maddie Schwegler each put away a pair of goals against LBSU, and Emaly Hutton chipped in one with two assists.
The Lancers will take next week off before heading up to the Aggie Invite, hosted by UC Davis, to play four games on February 11-12.
