WSOC Preview: Lancers Set to End Regular Season in Texas
10/16/2023 1:25:00 PM | Women's Soccer
RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist women's soccer program secured two four-goal wins last week against Stephen F. Austin and UTRGV to clinch a spot in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament and improve their conference record to 4-0-3. The Lancers will finish out the regular season on the road this week at Tarleton and Abilene Christian to determine their seeding in the conference tournament.
THE LANCERS AT A GLANCE
After going down early to SFA by a penalty kick, California Baptist bounced back and found the back of the net four times to ensure a 4-1 win on Thursday evening. Easton Seip and Ava Westlund scored their first collegiate goals as freshmen, flexing the Lancer's ability to score goals off the bench. Noa Schumacher tallied eight saves this week between the posts, allowing just one goal and earning her seventh shutout of the season against UTRGV. Kaylee Hauck scored a brace against the Vaqueros, while Morgan Witz picked up her first goal of the season, and Sonja Lux scored her second.
The Lancers still have not dropped a game in WAC play and have improved to a 13-game unbeaten streak, the longest in the Division I era in CBU history. Schumacher leads in the WAC with seven shutouts, an 85.9% save percentage, and a .630 goals-against average. The Lancers also had four new goal scorers this past week, with Syra Valdez, Westlund, Seip, and Witz all finding their first goal this season. California Baptist finds themselves back in second place and will be able to stay there if they can pull out two wins this week in Texas, earning them a possible first or second-seed in the tournament for a first-round bye.

THE TEXANS AT A GLANCE
Tarleton sits in eighth place in the WAC standings as they enter the final week of regular season play with a 1-5-1 conference record. The Texans found their lone win of the season about halfway through the year and won 1-0 against UTRGV on the road. Before that, Tarleton tied SFA 1-1 for their second unbeaten conference match. The Texas squad is currently on a five-game losing streak and will be looking to right their sails as the season comes to a close against the Lancers.
Rylee Low leads the Texans with four goals this season, with Mila Bettinelli right behind her with three goals. Jaycie Bass has three assists this season and is a crucial piece to the Texan midfield. Between the posts, Mikayla Kendall has clocked in nearly 1350 minutes in the goal and holds 111 saves on the year. The Texans have allowed 31 goals this season and have scored 19.
THE WILDCATS AT A GLANCE
Sitting just above Tarleton in the WAC Standings, Abilene Christian holds two wins and five losses through conference play. The Wildcats hold a 7-8-1 overall record and have managed to find the back of the net against some of the top teams in the conference. Most recently, ACU was handed a pair of losses by Southern Utah and Utah Tech this week. The Wildcats are set to face Grand Canyon on Thursday before facing CBU, as a pair of wins for ACU could earn them a spot in the WAC Tournament.
Leading the squad in goals is Chayse Thorn at 13. Thorn has been consistent on the offensive attack for the Wildcats and also owns a pair of assists this season. The squad has outscored their opponents 28 to 25 and holds 53 saves in goal across three different goalkeepers this year.
