CBU Tops Tarleton on the Road

STEPHENVILLE, TX --- The Tarleton Texans welcomed the California Baptist women's soccer team on Thursday evening for their second to last Western Athletic Conference matchup. The Lancers found the back of the net twice in the first half and once in the second half for a solid 3-1 victory against the Texans. CBU improves their WAC record to 5-0-3 and moves to a 14-game unbeaten streak.
"We knew going into the final weekend of conference play and being on the road what specifically we needed to focus on and accomplish," said Kristen St. Clair. "It wasn't our sharpest game but l'm proud of the team for showing strong grit and resilience to earn 3 important points."
Jayden Ramirez struck first for the Lancers in the 16th minute after she scored in the top right corner of the goal off an assist from Morgan Witz. Witz got in on the scoring action as well in the 28th minute after burying a ball in the back of the net from outside the 18-yard box for an impeccable second goal of the season for the midfielder. The Texans kept knocking on the door despite being down 2-0 and eventually found a retaliation goal just before halftime.
The Lancers entered the second 45 minutes with some fire and totaled 16 shots against the Texans. A beautiful cross from Kaylee Hauck would give the Lancers the lead after freshman Ava Westlund tapped the goal into the Texan net for the Lancer's third goal of the match. CBU held the Texans scoreless in the second half and ensured their 14th match unbeaten this season, tied with the CBU women's soccer program record. The last time the Lancers lost was in August against Colorado State at home, and since then have maintained a perfect record.
As California Baptist enters their final regular season match on Sunday, there is still a chance for the Lancers to clinch a part of the WAC regular-season champion title. CBU needs to win against Abilene Christian, and Utah Valley would need to tie Southern Utah on Monday evening for the two to be co-champions. A win for CBU and a loss for Utah Valley would make California Baptist the outright champions of the 2023 season. A win for Utah Valley makes the Wolverines the outright champions, no matter what.
"Offensively I was really pleased with how we created several quality opportunities on the night and finished our three goals," remarked St. Clair. "It was three unique goals that shows the quality of our group as we keep refining our process. Now we turn our focus and preparation to Sundays final conference game."
California Baptist will head west to Abilene Christian University for a Sunday game at 10 a.m. PST to close out the regular season before hosting the WAC Tournament in Riverside, CA.

"Defensively our backline has continued their strong run of form and been a big contributor all season long. Noa Schumacher has been outstanding and came up with several key saves to preserve the 3 points," continued St. Clair.
