The Lopes struck first in the 12th minute after Gianna Gourley found the top right corner of the goal for her 14th goal of the season. California Baptist responded well and found their rhythm to begin to test GCU's keeper. The Lancers tallied six shots through the first 45 minutes but went into halftime down by a goal. The Lopes totaled seven shots through the first half and kept them coming in the second half, totaling 10 shots on frame.
A foul in the 81st minute by GCU would ultimately give the Lancers the lead after Taylor Summit lobbed a beautiful ball across the 18-yard box that found Jana Heinen, who headed it over the Lope's goalkeeper. The tying goal marked Heinen's first of her career and Summit's second assist of the year. GCU did not back down and continued to press the CBU backline, but Heinen came up big again and stopped Gourley from a one-on-one opportunity with a perfect slide tackle inside the box. Noa Schumacher quelled GCU's final opportunity in the 87th minute after making a save on the goal-line off a Lope free kick.
California Baptist moves to an overall 7-1-6 record, making this their longest unbeaten streak in Division I history. The Lancers have gone 11 matches without a loss and have cemented their spot as the lone team in second place in the WAC standings. Both California Baptist and Utah Valley are the only squads that have not lost a conference game yet this season.
"While I thought we played well enough for the 3 points, taking a point on the road is still really important. We gave up a goal early but didn't back down, and continued to fight," remarked head coach Kristen St. Clair. "We were finally rewarded for our resilience and grit with the goal in the 81st minute. It was a center back combination of Taylor Summit's service and assist to Jana Heinen for the goal. Noa Schumacher continues to prove why she's the best goalkeeper in the conference, coming up with big saves when needed. I'm really proud of our team's grit and resilience on the road in a hostile environment and missing some key players to injury."
The Lancers will return home to CBU Soccer Stadium on Thursday, October 12th to host Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m.
