CBU Goes Perfect on Day One of the Tina Finali Invite

THOUSAND OAKS--- The California Baptist University women's water polo team opened day 1 of the Tina Finali Invitational with a double-digit win over Occidental and a closely-contested win against the University of Toronto. They defeated the Tigers 21-6 and the Varsity Blues 10-7.

The Lancers had defeated the Tigers earlier this season 25-6 at the Bloomington Classic to make it 12-straight wins over Occidental in a matchup that dates back to 2000. Their win over the University of Toronto was their first-ever matchup with the Canadian team, who came into the match with a 14-8-1 record.

CBU struck first against Occidental with a goal by Celeste Almendariz, one of five Lancers to record multiple goals in the win over the Tigers. Anielysa Menna led all scorers with four after scoring a season-high six goals against the Tigers in the previous matchup at the Indiana Classic. Julia Miller was in goal for the Lancers and recorded six saves.

The matchup with the Varsity Blues of the University of Toronto was tightly-contested and came down to the final period. CBU never trailed in the match, but the Varsity Blues got within one goal on multiple occasions, and the score was 5-4 heading into the fourth.

CBU started the game out with back-to-back possession ending in goals. The Lancers secured their win with a three-goal fourth quarter led by Jenna Dickstein's two clutch goals and another by Maddie Schwegler, who led CBU with three goals.

CBU has won five of their last six games to get to an 11-10 overall record.

CBU will continue the Tina Finali tournament with matchups against Cal Luther and Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, February 25th, at 8 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. in Thousand Oaks, CA.
