Montes De Oca and Lyon Lead a Potent Lancer Offense to Big Wins in Utah

CEDAR CITY, UTAH – California Baptist University softball swept Wednesday's Western Athletic Conference doubleheader against Southern Utah 5-3 and 10-4, respectively. Incredible offensive efforts from Kayla Lyon and Alissa Montes De Oca boosted the Lancers to wins 22 and 23 on the season. Now with a 7-4 conference record, the Lancers are in sole possession of second place in the WAC standings, one-and-a-half games behind leader Utah Tech, and leading Grand Canyon and Stephen F. Austin by half a game each.
The Lancers have a unique opportunity tomorrow, with a series sweep within reach, to get a game up on GCU and SFA before coming home for another series this weekend against Utah Valley, currently 12-20 overall and 6-6 in the WAC.
GAME ONE: CBU 5 – SUU 3
The Lancers needed no acclimation time, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first courtesy of a Maya Martinez single. Karmyna Becerra added one to the board in the third, plating Sydney Soto on a sacrifice fly to double the Lancer lead.
The margin would double again in the fourth as Kayla Lyon belted her fourth home run of the year, bringing Samantha Demyon in to make it 4-0 CBU. Soto recorded the final insurance run for CBU four batters later, notching an RBI infield single to score pinch runner Natalie Elias to make it 5-0 Lancers.
CBU's starter in the circle Alyssa Argomaniz was strong through four innings, allowing just four hits to start the game. She ran into some trouble in the fifth inning when Southern Utah found their bats, scoring three runs on three hits. Presley Hosick would relieve Argomaniz before the end of the inning, limiting damage to just those three runs.
The Thunderbirds would manage just one hit for the remainder of the game, earning Argomaniz her fifth win, while Hosick collected her fourth save.
GAME TWO: CBU 10 – SUU 4
The script flipped a bit to begin the second game, as SUU got off to a big lead in the first, sending a three-run shot over the fence to take the early lead.
The Lancers weren't rattled, though, answering with a Valerie Alvarez RBI single in the top of the second. Becerra and Lyon would drive in two more in the third with help from a defensive error and a single, respectively. Alissa Montes De Oca gave CBU its first lead of game two in the fourth inning with an RBI single that scored Priscilla Estrada, who had led off the frame with her sixth extra-base hit of the season.
The Thunderbirds would even it up at four-all in the top of the fifth on a sac fly, but it was all Lancers after that. Montes De Oca would again put CBU ahead with an RBI double, followed two batters later by Lyon, who would put the game out of reach with her second two-run homer of the day, giving her the team lead with five.

Estrada stretched the lead to four, and a standup triple from Soto made it a five-run advantage in the top of the seventh. Scoring was capped in historic fashion by Montes De Oca, who achieved a feat no Lancer has before in the Division I era by recording her fifth hit of the game and going a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate. Her final knock, a well-hit single to left center, scored Soto, who finished the day with three runs scored, two RBI, and five hits herself. Until today, the single-best hitting performance by a Lancer since joining the DI ranks came from Kate Mangrello, who went 4-4 at Utah Tech (then Dixie State) on March 6, 2021.

Jazmine Castaneda earned her sixth win of the season after throwing 5.2 innings of relief work. She struck out one, but more importantly, held the TBirds to just three hits and one earned run.
The Lancers will go for the road sweep on Wednesday, with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. Pacific. It would be just the second road conference series sweep since joining the WAC and the first since sweeping NM State in Las Cruces last season.
