RIVERSIDE--- California Baptist opened against the Abilene Christian Wildcats on Friday night and walked away with a big 7-2 win. Liam Rocha was the star of the night once again, putting on a show with eight strikeouts across eight innings for the Lancers. CBU will enter Saturday night's game 11-8 in Western Athletic Conference and 22-20 overall.
After a two-inning pitchers duel, the Lancers broke through the Wildcat's defense with a solo home run from Michael Carpentier for an early lead. CBU extended their lead again in the fourth with a single from Josh Paino that brought home two runners, and a sacrifice bunt from Connor McGuire would put CBU ahead by four.
The Wildcats tallied a run in the top of the fifth, but California Baptist responded with a single from Jake Skipworth that scored Carpentier. With the bases loaded, ACU walked Shayne Simpson and walked in a run for the Lancers. Paino stepped up again and collected his third RBI of the game after Dustin Garcia made it home for a 7-1 lead. ACU picked up another run in the top of the eighth but couldn't string together a rally to compete with the Lancer's five-run lead.
Rocha had another marquee night on the mound, throwing eight strikes in seven innings and collecting his sixth win of the season. Over his last four starts for the Lancers, the right-handed pitcher has allowed just two earned runs, thrown 33 strikeouts, and has a .68 ERA.
Carpentier led the offense for CBU, tallying two hits and an RBI against the ACU pitching staff. Paino followed suit with three RBI of his own, and Cole Howarth picked up a hit and an RBI too.
California Baptist returns to Totman Stadium on Saturday evening at 5 p.m., looking to secure the series with another win against the Wildcats.
