Lancers Close out Regular Season Play and Earn Berth into Postseason
5/20/2023 3:10:00 PM | Baseball
PHOENIX, AZ— California Baptist closed out their final regular season series on Sunday afternoon, falling 8-1 to Grand Canyon University and tallying a final 15-15 conference record. The Lancers enter the conference tournament as the eighth seed and earn their first Division I postseason berth during their first year of eligibility.
GCU came out swinging from the first inning and quickly accumulated a five-run lead by the fourth inning. The Lancers found some success in the sixth inning after Dustin Garcia hit a triple and was scored by a Mitchel Simon double. The Lopes answered in the following inning with an RBI single up the middle and extended their lead again in the seventh with a two-run homer, securing the win and three-peat conference title. California Baptist ended with five hits against the Lopes, as Simon earned the lone RBI with one hit on the day.
A 15-15 WAC finish for CBU tallied a .500 conference winning percentage heading into their first Division I Era postseason. The Western Athletic Conference announced that tournament seeding and conference standings would be determined by conference winning percentage instead of total wins due to unbalanced schedules throughout the season. Their .500 finish placed them as the eighth seed in the WAC Tournament and means they will face the fifth seed Abilene Christian in the first contest of the tournament.
The Lancers entered the weekend with the hopes of earning a first-round bye, but three losses to the Lopes dropped the Lancers from fourth to eighth, a true testament to how close standings were throughout the entirety of the regular season. Nonetheless, California Baptist will start their postseason in Mesa, Arizona, against Abilene Christian on Tuesday, May 23rd, at noon.
