Lancers Celebrate Seniors, Earn Berth Into WAC Tournament

RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University softball closed out the 2023 season against Seattle U on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Redhawks 8-1 in the regular season finale. The Lancers end the regular season with an overall record of 27-27 and a 10-14 mark in the Western Athletic Conference.
Despite the loss, the Lancers have qualified for the 2023 University Credit Union WAC Softball Tournament in their first season of eligibility. Officially, CBU finished the regular season in a four-way tie for eighth place with Utah Valley, Abilene Christian, and NM State, but through multiple tie-breaking scenarios, earned the final bid to Phoenix.
Seattle U controlled the action from the start, scoring three in the top of the first and adding three more in the fourth and one in the sixth and seventh innings. A late run in the bottom of the seventh, courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Macie Howes, scored Merissa Borkowski, avoiding the shutout.
Presley Hosick and Morgan McConnell carried the bulk of the pitching load on Saturday, with Hosick getting the start and, subsequently, the loss on 3.1 innings pitched. Senior Amanda Hernandez made her only appearance of the season in the top of the seventh inning after battling a season-long injury. She closed the book on her Lancer career with one more strikeout while allowing two hits.
The team will play at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday in a single-elimination first-round matchup against fifth-seeded Tarleton State. The Lancers and Texans met up in Stephenville on March 31 and April 1 this season, with CBU taking two of three on the road.
