Schumacher Leads Lancers to Fourth Shutout

SAN JOSE, CA --- Noa Schumacher picked up her fourth shutout of the season as the Lancers traveled to Northern California to face San Jose State on Thursday evening in their second to last non-conference game. Schumacher led CBU to a scoreless draw at Spartan Soccer Complex, their second tie of the season. California Baptist moves to 5-1-2 on the season.
"This was a game of two halves. First half when we stuck to the game plan we controlled the game, however when we got away from that we let our opponent back in the game. Second half we tightened up defensively and offensively our speed of play was better and we created some some really dangerous scoring opportunities," remarks head coach Kristen St. Clair.
The Lancers opened the match well, attacking from the very start and heavily pressing the Spartans right out of the gate. About ten minutes into the game, San Jose settled into their rhythm and forced Schumacher to make four saves out of their eight shots after the first 45 minutes. CBU tallied a total of 15 shots against SJSU, with six being on target. Some of the Lancer's best opportunities came from their three corner kicks, but they could not capitalize on the chances.
Schumacher tallied a total of five saves against the Spartans, her second most saves in a single game this season. The senior goalkeeper made two huge saves on a pair of breakaways from San Jose to earn her fourth shutout of the year. Schumacher now leads the Western Athletic Conference with the least amount of goals allowed and is a critical piece of the defensive success the Lancers have seen this season.
St. Clair adds, "We need to mature and do a better job of finishing our opportunities in the box. The WAC is loaded with talented teams and inconsistency will not help us achieve the goals we have set for ourselves this season. We've gone through a lot of adversity lately with injuries so this is an opportunity for others to step up and score goals".
California Baptist University's women's soccer program will now head north to face Sacramento State on Sunday at 1 p.m. to close out their non-conference slate.
