Lancers End Nonconference Slate with a Draw

SACRAMENTO, CA---Â California Baptist University's women's program continued north to finish their nonconference slate against Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon. Frida Murrieta picked up her third goal of the season off a penalty kick in the first half for an early lead, but a heartbreaking goal in the 89th minute from the Hornets would move the Lancers to 5-1-3 on the year.
"This is certainly a disappointing result especially as we dominated the game. We need to execute better. The lack of finishing is not good enough for our standards," remarks head coach Kristen St. Clair. "Despite our recent rash of injuries, we still need players to step up and execute in front of goal. The last 10 seconds of the game was an odd sequence, however, we still need to have better composure to clear that ball. That's the difference in the margins each game".
CBU opened the match well against Sacramento and pressed hard against the home team's defense, tallying eight shots in the first half. McKenna Ray drew the foul in the 18-yard box in the 17th minute after she was taken out from behind by a Hornet defender and earned a penalty kick for CBU. Murrieta buried her third goal of the season in the upper right corner and gave the Lancers the lead heading into halftime.

Sacramento State continued to fend off any of the Lancer's chances through the second half and had a few good opportunities to even the match. The Hornets put up six shots against Noa Schumacher, but it was not until the final three seconds of the game that Sacramento State evened the score off a corner. Schumacher has allowed just five goals through nine games this season and has tallied 29 total saves.
St. Clair adds, "We know we need to do better and I believe we will. At this point we need to put this game behind us and shift our focus to conference play that starts on Thursday. We have a good group and now we go back to work tofocus on our execution and performance one game at a time."
The draw marks the third tie of the season for CBU and the second-ever tie against the Hornets in Lancer women's soccer history. California Baptist will now return to Riverside to open Western Athletic Conference play on Thursday, September 21st, at 7 p.m. against WAC favorites Utah Valley. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
