Lancers Battle to a Draw Against Trailblazers
9/28/2023 9:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
ST. GEORGE, UT--- The Utah Tech Trailblazers welcomed the California Baptist Lancers on Thursday evening for CBU's third Western Athletic Conference match of the season, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Utah Tech made a late comeback in the second half to extrapolate a single point for each team. CBU moves to a 1-0-2 conference record while earning a 6-1-5 overall record this year.
"The result is certainly disappointing. Credit to our opponent they played with a lot of heart and their keeper came up with some good saves to keep us off the board," remarked head coach Kristen St. Clair.  "At the end of the day we can't let teams back in games and points slip through our grasp."
Jayden Ramirez opened the game up in the 12th minute after she capitalized on a free kick by Jana Heinen and found the back of the net for her third goal of the season. The Lancers held the Trailblazers goalless through the first half, but Utah Tech returned with a vengeance in the 48th minute, and UTU leading goal-scorer Lacy Fox slotted one past Noa Schumacher.
Kaylee Hauck gave California Baptist the lead again in the second half after placing a ball low into the left corner of Utah Tech's net off a beautiful cross from Lauryn White. The squads went back and forth for the next twenty minutes, mostly battling in the midfield through a chippy match. The Trailblazers ultimately found the equalizer in the 84th minute to end the game in a 2-2 draw.
The match totaled 19 fouls, while the Lancers outshot the Trailblazers 15 to 13. Both squads had five shots on goal, and both keepers made three saves each. Heinen picked up her second assist of the season, while Hauck earned her fifth goal this year.
"We should have put the game away and that's on us. We'll learn from this and do better. Losing our top goal scorers to injury has been tough but this is an opportunity for others to step up and prove their quality," continued St. Clair. "That starts in training and continues with the application and execution in the game. I believe in our team and know that with some minor adjustments we can achieve great things this season. At this point we need to put this game behind us and focus on our preparation for Sundays game."
The Lancers will now head north to Cedar City, Utah, to face Southern Utah on Sunday at 1 p.m. MST (noon PST).
