LONG BEACH --- The California Baptist women's water polo team opened their 2024 campaign at the Long Beach Mini Invite on Saturday, ultimately falling in both matchups to two ranked squads. The Lancers took on #21 CSUN in a close morning match that saw the Matadors victorious 16-12, and then dropped their second match of the afternoon to #7 Long Beach State 23-9 to finish the day.Â
GAME #1 vs. CSUN:
CSUN began the first match of the day with a strong 4-0 advantage right out of the gates in the first period. Emaly Hutton righted the sails for the Lancers with a pair of back-to-back goals that would put the squad within reach of the Matador's lead. The score remained tight through the first but a last-minute goal by CSUN carried them to a 6-5 lead heading into the second period. The back-and-forth scoring carried on through the second and third periods, but a 4-2 run by the Matadors ultimately secured the 16-12 win in the end.
The Lancers outshot the Matadors by nearly 10 shots through the first match, but CSUN was able to find the back of the net with a .500 shooting percentage compared to CBU's .285.
GAME #2 vs. Long Beach State:
CBU fell behind early in the second match of the day against Long Beach, but another dime from Hutton improved morale for the Lancers. The Beach piled on the goals early, ending the first period with a 5-1 advantage. The Beach would allow just three goals total from CBU in the first half, racking up a ten-goal lead heading into halftime.Â
The Lancer managed to find a better rhythm in the third period, allowing just four Beach goals and finding the back of the net twice, courtesy of Devyn Ruffer and Aubrey Newton. The fourth quarter favored CBU, as the Lancers opened the frame with four goals from four different Lancers. Three more goals to end the period from The Beach would solidify the 23-9 final score.
The Lancers are set to return to their home pool on January 27th for a pair of matches against UC San Diego and the University of Redlands.
