RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's water polo team split the Lancer Mini Invite, falling to La Salle in the opener and dominating #22 CSUN in the final match.
The split moves the Lancers record to 7-13 and 2-2 at home. The win over CSUN was CBU's first ranked victory since January of 2022 when the Lancers defeated CSUN at home 9-8 at the Joust Tournament. The win also avenged the season-opening loss the Lancers suffered at the hands of CSUN, falling to 16-12 at the Long Beach Invite.
GAME #1 vs. LA SALLE:
In the second-ever meeting between La Salle and CBU, the Explorers got the better of the Lancers after a fourth-period surge by the visitors. The match started in favor of La Salle, netting the first two goals via Frencesca Co. Delilah Moreno opened scoring for the Lancers on a power play, but La Salle quickly answered with a power-play goal of their own. CBU would surge ahead off of a 3-0 on goals by Kyra Kahahawai, Cayleigh Carter, and Niya Bumbaca. The momentum put CBU ahead 4-3 heading into intermission.
The Explorers retook the advantage by scoring the first two goals of the third period, but CBU would respond quickly with two quick goals from Adrianna Wong and Carter to reclaim the lead. The Lancers ended the third period with plenty of momentum after goalie Tyanna Schneider scored a goal in the waning seconds of the period to give CBU its largest lead at 8-6.
Unfortunately for CBU, Schneider's goal would be the last of the match, and La Salle would produce six goals of its own in the final period. The 6-0 fourth-period advantage would ultimately give La Salle the 12-8 victory and help end a three-game slide. Moreno and Carter were the standouts in the opening match, combining for half of the CBU goals and three assists.
GAME #2 vs. CSUN:
The final match of the day for CBU was against #22 CSUN, marking the 12th-ranked matchup the Lancers have had this season. The Matadors claimed victory in the previous meeting this season, but the Lancers flipped the script on the Matadors in dominating fashion.
The two teams traded goals in a high-flying opening two minutes of action, but it would be all Lancers from that point on, rattling off eight straight goals to grab the momentum of the match completely. A different Lancer scored all eight goals, and five came from power plays. The match was chippy, with a combined 27 exclusions between the two teams, seven of which occurred in the opening frame.
CSUN would finally end the run in the early seconds of the third period, but Moreno would answer right back. The Matadors attempted to get themselves back in the game with a 3-1 run, but the Lancers snuffed that out quickly with three of the next four goals. CBU would go on to complete the upset and capture the win 17-10.
Emaly Hutton and Reese Berigner each recorded a hat trick in the game, with Hutton going perfect on her shot attempts. Newton and Moreno each recorded multiple-goal games against the Matadors, while Cayleigh Carter paced the group with three assists. In goal, Schneider had 17 saves between the two games and recorded two steals in the win over CSUN.
NEXT: The Lancers will remain at home to welcome in the Biola Eagles on Friday, March 15, at 1 PM.
