Downer Dominates with a 3 Hitter Victory Against Aggies

RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist baseball team notched their sixth win in a row on Saturday evening in the third match-up against UC Davis after downing the Aggies 7-1. Starting pitcher Brandon Downer earned his first pitching win of the season after throwing seven innings of action and allowing just three hits as CBU improved to 8-3 on the season.

Mitchel Simon opened the floodgates early for the Lancers as he launched his fourth home run this year in the bottom of the first for three runs. UC Davis responded well to going down early, hitting a home run in the following inning to cut the Lancer's lead to two. A single and a pair of walks in the bottom of the second loaded the bases for CBU, but the home team was only able to tally a lone run off Michael Carpentier's RBI single for a 4-1 lead.

A pitching duel ensued from the third inning through the sixth, but California Baptist broke the four-inning stalemate after Carpentier came home on an Aggie error in the bottom of the seventh. CBU loaded the bases yet again in the eighth with a double and a pair of walks, capitalizing for a pair of runs via Julian Alvarez's sacrifice fly and an RBI single via Connor McGuire to finalize the win.

The Lancer's pitching staff was impressive on Saturday night as Downer allowed just a single run and three hits, notching five strikeouts to his final line through seven innings of work. Jared Villalobos made his third appearance this season in the eighth inning as he shut the door on UC Davis, going three up and three down in both innings of action. Carpentier led on the offensive side from a designated hitter role, boasting three hits and an RBI with a pair of doubles. During the 2021 series against the Aggies, the Lancers also allowed just three hits from UC Davis during the first game of the weekend.

California Baptist will be looking for their first series sweep since May of 2022 on Sunday afternoon as they face UC Davis at noon for the final installment of the weekend series.
