CBU Concludes the Convergence Tournament 2-2

CLAREMONT/POMONA--- The California Baptist University women's water polo team fell short in two close matches against #22 LIU and #23 Marist to close out the Convergence Tournament.

The tournament opened with a tilt against LIU in Claremont, where the Sharks would win 15-9, and concluded with a one-goal loss to the 23rd-ranked Marist Red Foxes in Pomona, California. The loss drops CBU to 6-11 overall and still remains 1-0 in conference action.

GAME #1:

CBU and #22 LIU squared off in the morning game at Axelrood Pool in Claremont. The Lancers would be the aggressors to start the match, notching three unanswered goals in the first period. LIU connected on its first goal with 51 seconds remaining in the period, but an Emaly Hutton buzzer-beater would give the Lancers a 4-1 advantage in the first eight minutes.

The Sharks would flip the script in the second period by outscoring CBU 4-1, and the two teams would be tied heading into halftime at five apiece. The third period was all LIU, scoring six goals, including a 5-0 run to close the period. Emily Lopez broke up the scoring run with a goal at the 4:25 mark, but the damage had been done, and the Sharks would lead 11-6 heading into the final frame.

CBU and LIU would cancel each other out with three goals each in the fourth period as the Sharks would take the match 15-9. Hutton and Lopez both registered multiple goals in the contest, while freshman Delilah Moreno had another busy afternoon with a goal, two assists, two steals, and a team-leading three points.

GAME #2:

The final match of the tournament came against #23 Marist in Pomona, California. The opening period saw a ton of offense, with the two teams combining for seven goals, four of which came off of power plays. The Red Foxes would hold a steady lead throughout the first half and would hold a 7-5 lead through 16 minutes of action.

Hutton would close the gap to one to start the third period and pick up her second hat trick of the tournament. Marist would expand their one-goal lead to four, rattling off three consecutive goals. Kyra Kahahawai would erase one of those goals with one of her own to end the third period, igniting a comeback attempt for CBU. The Lancers held Marist scoreless in the final frame, and goals from Dora Lehoczky and Grace Bergquist would close the gap to one with 20 seconds left. The Red Foxes would play a game of keep away as the Lancers attempted to steal the ball and held on for the 10-9 victory.

Hutton led the way with three goals and a steal for CBU, while Kahahawai connected on both of her goals and registered a steal. Hutton scored nine goals and dished out three assists over the two-day tournament to lead the way for the Lancers on the weekend. Moreno registered seven goals and passed out two assists as a part of an impressive weekend for the freshman.

In goal, Tyanna Schneider saved 29 shots on the weekend and played all 128 minutes of action for the Lancers.
