CBU Drops First Game in Texas to Tarleton

STEPHENVILLE, TX--- The California Baptist baseball program opened their weekend away with a 4-1 loss to the Tarleton Texans. An early lead from TSU in the first inning was tied up by the Lancers but another offensive push from the Texans secured the win in favor of the home team. CBU moves to 13-9 on the year and is now 3-1 in Western Athletic Conference play, while Tarleton improves to 12-10 on the season and picks up their third conference win.

Lukas Pirko started on the mound for the Lancers and went through five innings. The freshman allowed just one earned run and picked up three strikeouts, but left with his first pitching loss of the season. The Texans held on to their 1-0 lead through the sixth inning until Julian Alvarez tied the game with a sacrifice fly that brought home Michael Carpentier. The lead was short-lived for CBU, however, as a three-run inning from Tarleton would secure the final 4-1 line.

California Baptist attempted a comeback in the top of the eighth after Mitchel Simon doubled with a single out on the board. Alvarez placed a ball to the shortstop and looked to have beat out the first baseman's tag, but an overturned call by the trio of umpires slowed down any momentum the Lancers had. CBU was unable to tally any runs off the board.

Simon left with three hits and a pair of doubles, leading the Lancers offensively. Pirko and Ryan Hetzler combined for five strikeouts across nine innings, allowing nine hits and just a single earned run. CBU will return to Tarleton Baseball Complex on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the second installment of the WAC series and will be looking to even the series with the Texans.
