RIVERSIDE--- Defense and the combination of Emaly Hutton and Cayleigh Carter led the California Baptist University women's water polo team to their third conference win of the season over Santa Clara by a score of 10-6.
The six goals allowed by the CBU defense was their second-lowest total of the season and the second-best defensive outing in Gold Coast Conference play this season. The win pushed the Lancers back over .500 in GCC matches and was their 11th win of the season.
The Broncos set the tone early in the match, quickly gathering a 3-2 advantage in the opening period, two of which came from powerplays. The one-point lead for the Broncos would be their last as the Lancer offense started to gain momentum, and their defense kicked into overdrive. CBU would mount a 7-0 run that began at the end of the first period and would not stop until the end of the third period. Carter, Hutton, and Delilah Moreno did much of the damage on the run, accounting for four goals and three assists.
CBU's defense did not allow a goal for nearly 17 minutes of game time, largely thanks to multiple field blocks and a stout performance from Tyanna Schneider. Schneider made nine saves in the game for CBU and tacked on two steals. Schneider continues to be the GCC leader in saves, with over 200 credited to her name this season alone.
Santa Clara would add on consecutive goals in the second half to bring the deficit down to four goals, but the CBU defense would step up again and only allow one more goal that their offense matched to earn the victory by a final score of 10-6.
Hutton and Carter were the headliners for the CBU offense, combining for three goals and six assists in the game. Kyra Kahahawai and Delilah Moreno both submitted stellar performances and scored two goals apiece. Kahahawai also was a standout on the defensive end of the pool, adding in three field blocks and a steal to her statline.
The win moves CBU into a tie with Pacific for third place in the conference standings and keeps them a game clear of San Diego State and Azusa Pacific as the GCC schedule winds down.
NEXT: The Lancers are back in action tomorrow afternoon for a date with #6 Loyola Marymount at 3 PM at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
