TEMPE, AZ--- The California Baptist University women's water polo team split day two of the ASU Invitational as they fell short to #13 Arizona State and defeated Cal Lutheran on the opening weekend of the 2025 Water Polo season.
GAME 1 VS #13 ARIZONA STATE:
The first period was a back-and-forth affair, with three lead changes in the first eight minutes alone. CBU kept the pressure on the host Sun Devils in the second period by putting a trio of goals in the back of the net. ASU would fall behind by two goals but would close out the period with two late goals to put themselves ahead 7-5 at the break.
Niya Bumbaca gave CBU the lead in the third period after an early offensive flurry from the Lancers, but the Sun Devils would overcome the deficit by scoring five of the final six goals. ASU would dominate the fourth period by a score of 4-1 to remain undefeated to begin the season.
Kyra Kahahawai and Celeste Almendariz continue to be the engines of the CBU offense and would combine for seven of the ten CBU goals in the defeat. Bumbaca, Dora Lehoczky, and Reese Beringer would add in the other goals as the Lancers fell short by a half dozen to the Sun Devils.
GAME 2 VS CAL LUTHERAN:
The final game of the ASU Invite was a close one to start as the Regals of Cal Lutheran netted three goals early on the Lancers. CBU stayed the course and managed to put a trio of goals on the scoreboard as well as the two teams were knotted after eight minutes of action at Mona Plummer Aquatics Center. CBU's defense flexed its muscles in the second period by not allowing a single Regal goal to find its mark while putting four of its own through the back of the net.
Cal Lutheran would not go away and would put together a solid third period, outscoring the Lancers 5-3 to pull within two as the two teams headed to the fourth period in search of their first win of the season. The Lancers were determined not to leave Tempe winless and would put together a six-goal period to put the game well out of range from Cal Lutheran. CBU had five different goal scorers in the final period, including Kahahawai netting a pair to give CBU its first win of the season by a score of 16-10.
NEXT: The Lancers will return home to host The Joust, beginning with a matchup against #3 USC on Friday, January 24, at 10:30 AM.
